I suspect many of these pows actually were civilians and that the Germans rounded up all men of military age inside the kessels, whether they were wearing Red Army uniform or not

Workaholic. He made himself dictator by sheer diligence and he kept it up for over two decades until the immense strain of the war forced him to take things a bit more easily afterwards.

@oliversmith9200 I think you're mostly right. Totalitarianism couldn't have perpetuated itself without mass support. You would think the fact that The Soviet Government being unable to feed the population adequately would have undermined its legitimacy but maybe this was believed to be a temporary problem.

Sure. But the Soviets didn't know what Japanese intentions were except for what they could learn from Sorge and other agents. I don't think the Japanese themselves decided to "strike south" until the summer of 1941.
