Exactly. The Western Desert was a desert (shock!). Everything had to be shipped by the Italian marine and to make things worse there were no railways.

@TheImperatorKnight I think what the French wanted was not money but coal (the Germans had wrecked many of their nines in WW1). When the Germans didn't deliver the French tried to collect the coal themselves by occupying The Ruhr, but this failed because of the strike.

@lukebruce5234 Getty is very good. I think only now is the Great Terror coming into focus because this bizarre self - destructive episode requires a lot of explanation.

@TheImperatorKnight That 90% success claim is nonsense. Though Nijmegen was useful as a base for the February Offensive. There's a memorial at Groesbeek to the Canadian soldiers killed in the Battle of The Reichswald.

The charge against him is that he was better at the tactical than the operational level. Whether this is true is debatable.

@TheImperatorKnight I seem to remember reading that the British had pretty good information about it, but were sceptical because if it were true the Germans should have known that they were bound to be beaten.
