@Answer Questions Clearing The Scheldt was the truly vital task. That and not the fatuous plan to bounce The Rhine should have been the focus of operations in September.

I'm puzzled too. I think the answer is that the whole operation was planned in a fever of optimistic wishful thinking after the extraordinary victory in France.

Exactly. They are equally to blame. There are some remarkable comments above by David Rendall suggesting that they were really not that concerned about Arnhem and had an entirely different conception of the battle from the official plan. A suggestion worth following up.

Heaven knows. In retrospect the whole operation looks like the height of folly. I suppose it played some part in securiing Antwerp but that could have been done at much less cost.

I should try Frost's memoir of the battle.

robynn Yes. I think there was a lot of demand to make some use of the airborne forces before the war ended and so a plan was cobbled together. The whole botch seems to have been force led rather than strategy led.
