I’ve being at work from 10 am till 10:15 pm. So missed this but my first thought upon reading this I could not help but think; gee. Was it a balloon? And what happened to it being dangerous to shoot such things down… Let’s see what Styx has to say. I bet it’s more nuanced and informed than my own thoughts lol.

Yep, definitely more nuanced than me but I was aboot right. Something else to consider with the optics of the first balloon Vs the second, well third I think, is that if this was Russia their AA systems of which are from what I can see objectively superior to western systems the idea that a high altitude balloon could not be shot down would have being the source of much ridicule and embarrassment for the Kremlin. Biden Admin meanwhile? It’s gosh darn difficult to shoot down a high altitude balloon don't ya know! …. Utterly embarrassing. Almost as embarrassing as my British politicians acting like Britain still has the same capabilities and clout it did during the Crimean War period let alone ww2 or The Falklands ( a topic I very much disagree with Styx on. The Argie Bargies cemented the British claim to those islands the moment they forced us to shed soldiers blood in defense of an island that had a question mark RE ownership. The Argentine Invasion ended that question mark in favour of The British. Thanks Maggie!) Anyway. The West is plain embarrassing to behold these days if you ask me. Socially, economically, culturally, militarily and increasingly historically. Cos it’s been a hot while since we were a force to be reckoned with imo. Like a couple generations now. Good luck to the zoomers is all I can say.
