The rant, in defense of British food, around the 38:00 mark. Ain’t that the truth. Nowt wrong with beans on toast. It’s hearty and cheap…or at least it was until rampant inflation by a feckless ruling class. Anyway. As is fish and chips and by damn if toad in the hole is not comfort food.
Sausage roles, cornish pasties, parmosans, yorkshire puddings, quiches, crumpets, full English breakfast, shepards pie, cottage pie, bubble N squeak and on and on. Maybe I’m biased via having been a North East of England chef the past decade of my life but the notion of the 3 Bs of British food is both true and false. Depend where you go, as with wverything.
Plus, as Dank alluded too, it’s not my fault I come from generations of hardship induced thriftiness and frankly you aint cooking any of the aforementioned correctly, during an age of plenty, if you don’t use some of those spices one built an empire upon.
Huzzar unto the beer battered fish and chips I cook pretty much every day of my life. Such a dish served the homefront through much more than just 2 world wars….verily the M1911 of the culinary world….snarf snarf. Drinks tea imperially like.
