  1. the reason fingers were splayed in depictions of hands - is 'obviously' to show detail enough to be recognisable as a hand, hands having fingers. It is more likely that floor height of the caves varied over the thousands of years and no one was making scaffolding. Art was probably done at night when people were cave bound and likely bored. I don't see any strange prioritisation of Art above practicality, as you suggest.
