  1. I come from a long line of sheepherders on both sides of my family, and they all preferred mutton over lamb, so we grew up eating mutton. Now, when I eat lamb, I'm like "this is a sheep?" because it's so mild. I am from the Rocky Mountains region of US, btw, but my ancestors were all from northern England.

  2. There's also a large (relatively) population of Basque descendants around Elko, Nevada, and you can still get mutton from some restaurants there.
