@CinziaDuBois I was being a bit tongue in cheek, and I admit I am oversimplifying. I was pointing more towards history moving away from "inspiring stories intended to infuse the reader with meaning and purpose" towards "empiricism is how we establish what is really true, so let's dismiss anything that isn't empirically verified as being untrue or less important", which, to me, feels like a side effect of modernism and the Enlightenment.

I think some of this comes down to how traditional people understood what "history" is, and how modern people understand what "history" is. I'm speaking of universal history, and the desire to join one's people and oneself into the "universal history", compared to history as a list of facts of what happened and what didn't happen. The former approach was much more story-based and focused on instilling a sense of identity and shared purpose, whereas the modern approach to history seems to be trying to out-deconstruct each other and find how immoral our ancestors were. I would love to hear you talk more about how traditional people used "history" and what its purposes were compared to our modern approach to history.
