  1. The actual number of degrees of separation probably depends on outliers anyway. Anthropologists, diplomats and missionaries already serve as the bridge that reaches different cultures- 3 degrees on each side of the border should hit just about everyone. But are there any ways a linear relationship could be forced in practice out there? As an example, 10 people live in a series of rooms. They interact with the room on either side of them, but never 2 doors down. The person in the last room would take 10 degrees of separation just to get outside the building. Yeah, there probably isn't any literal series of rooms in real life, but there may be some situations where geography or culture forces an extra degree or two beyond the average.
