LA is decentralized and has terrible public transportation. The only "must-see" is Hollywood, and despite recent improvements, still doesn't have much to see. IMHO, the best thing in LA is the Griffith Observatory which is of high quality (and free), but who the hell goes to a city for an observatory? The actual Hollywood angle is ridiculously cheap-looking, and you can't even get anywhere near the Hollywood sign. The city hasn't capitalized on it's fame in a classy way- even the tourist areas are dangerous dumps once it gets dark. Sure, I appreciate having LA nearby for the airport (perhaps unfriendliest airport in the world), and it being an almost guaranteed tour date for musicians- but seriously, LA is boring and inconvenient at best, and a whole lot worse if I'm not trying to be nice. I recommend SF and SD far far more than LA.

Actually, I thought of a couple other things. If you go to LA, you should go to Universal Studios. There are other Universal Studios in the world- the difference is Universal Studios in LA isn't a theme park- it's a theme park tacked onto a studio. They really do use those stages and backdrops that appear on the studio tour, and they'll occasionally even be filming. The tour is probably the most actually Hollywood thing you can do easily that doesn't require scheduling... and you can spend the rest of the day doing the Theme Park attractions or Universal City Walk. And, you could also try to get into a taping of Jimmy Kimmel or a reality or game show or something like that. Most companies have moved most of their filming way out of the area though, and Hollywood Boulevard is perhaps the biggest tourist trap I've ever seen- despite it looking pretty shady (and it getting reaaal shady if you just go a bit farther). I haven't been to Times Square in a long while though.

Vanpyro Gaming I lived in Tokyo for years and not a single pusher was ever seen. There was ONNEE time, where the train was so crowded, I felt that if I jumped, I would remain mid-air and stuck between people, unable to actually reach the ground. One time in years. Granted, if you go during rush hour, you are really unlikely to get a seat (if you get to know your routes you'll know which cars are near the stairs at the major transfer stations though and give yourself a fighting chance to get one), and are quite likely to have people all around you and bumping into you as the train moves. But, that's rush hour. I've been in a car, in Tokyo, where I was literally the only person in there. Recently, the trains aren't so bad. I think their may be more lines, and there was a push a little while back to get working hours a little less standardized so that people are commuting over a wider range of hours.

When were you there and where were you going? Yamanote? Chuo? It depends on the districts, but like I said, I lived there- I've been through basically all of them. I wasn't often on the trains at the worst of the morning commute (usuaally started at 10), but still many times, and didn't notice pushers. At my normal commute times there definitely weren't any.

Cuz you see, my mom is a bit claustrophobic, so that's one reason she never wanted to visit. But when I looked around and thought about it, I pretty much decided the problem was totally avoidable by taking alternate lines for the few hours of the day it could matter.

In that case, may as well change your view on Vegas, which is by and large, a regular boring city of not particularly high or low crime. It has the Strip and all- but that can basically be considered the mostly legal side of organized crime- with plenty of security and muscle available to keep crime down and people coming to spend their cash. The flashiest red light districts of the world are. by and large, relatively safe in any city for that reason. It's when you get out to the slums/projects/ghettos/hood that your risk goes way up.
