I've done it. It's fun. Hostels are $15-35, and generally immaculate. You can get a 1, 2, or 3 week rail pass as a tourist. Expensive, but travel is expensive there, and it'll do most of the heavy lifting for you, and you can do say Kanto and Kansai for a week or two on each end of the trip. It's on the expensive end for backpacking, but it's Japan.

Check wikipedia, there are literally two different pages on backpacking. One is as you describe, the other is more or less what this video is about. Basically, taking just a bag or two, and traveling over a country/region/continent over an extended period of time, not necessarily even knowing where you're going more than a day or two in advance, with generally a greater interest in exploring the culture and meeting people than you would get on a vacation where you can easily be insulated.

All I'm saying is, maybe watchmojo doesn't quite understand what they're going for (seeing as they put a wilderness one in honorable mentions), but you're similarly missing out on what backpacking CAN mean. Quite a few people finish college and backpack Europe or SE Asia for a month or two or three before starting work. If your job is a bit more seasonal or contract-based then people can still get away anyway- or sometimes they'll take it with them (photographers, bloggers, etc). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backpacking_(travel) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backpacking_(wilderness)
