  4. This is true for LA, but much less so for the East Coast and Midwest which had much more infrastructure already in place before cars began to dominate. And it's particularly not true for NYC. There's no acceptable reason for the NYC subway to not be as good Seoul or Tokyo.

  7. It's almost fortunate for us that so much of government, Hollywood, etc are openly closet (you knows). Anti-CP sounding legislation seems like it would be the most slam dunk way to force through unconstitutional laws. But it probably makes them a bit afraid to weaponize something they're weak against.

  9. Maybe they should get rid of 24/7 service? Living in Japan it was often inconvenient to have all the trains shut down around midnight, particularly for people living over an hour or so out of the city. It made it really hard to ever have guests over since the window from "finish overtime" to "last train of the last leg" was usually only a few hours so it forced you to meet up in the city center. But you knew even if the trains and stations reeked of alcohol and vomit they'd get it all tidied up and aired out by the next morning. Almost like new by the start of the next day. This is just the consumer side, but I figure the behind the scenes stuff like track maintenance would be a lot easier too if they'd turn off the trains for 4-6 hours a day. Maybe if it's really that incompetently run this would just be giving up pretty much the only thing the NYC subway has going for it- but almost no one else around the world chooses to provide the service (on weekdays anyway). So maybe it's a premium service that shouldn't really be considered if the fundamentals aren't even working properly.

  10. Well, with 2.14m subs... if everyone went outside for a run 5 days a week, frankly, by year end, it'd probably kill someone. Car accident, mugging, heart attack, heat stroke, snake, something's probably gonna get someone. Probably even multiple someones. But sure, it's probably a net benefit.
