@Jehty_ Haircutting is a relatively commonly permitted home occupation in the US. It really depends on how Big-Brother-ish a locality cares to be. My m-i-l's hairdresser works out of her basement in a 1980s subdivision in a jurisdiction not known for its forward-looking rules. Another reason why bed and breakfasts tend to have more onerous rules might be that some would see them as a way around motel regulations.

Seems that many people don't realize that the original "suburban" parts of the US had corner stores just like the old city did... they just died out. In my entirely single-family neighborhood on the outskirts of a city (constructed from about 1900 to 1920), there is one house on a corner that had a basement shop until about 1990, and maybe five blocks from that there is a small building in the middle of a block that was built as some sort of small store.
