You are doing good work, Anna.
In order not to scare children, or maybe more sinister, make them likely victims, the fairytale depiction of trolls has been sweetened and downplayed. I think that is harmful.
.
Ukraine seemed far off for years, and what I heard from Ukraine before the war was about Odesa and that fatal street fight, as well as other things that don't look good.
Not that everything has to look good on the surface, that is untrue, but there needs to be a balance. Bad events can be spread as rumors, and when most people know little about the country, it can be terribly destructive.
When I read comments like "Ukraine does not exist" I realized something was off.

I believe the keeping of the name Engels, is likely nostalgic, or nobody cared about changing it,. My impression of current RF is not very communist, but it is definitely authoritarian and repressive, so I guess that has to be explained a bit more in depth. Fascism with its celebration of the strong leader, the centralization of power and riches, its fascination with violence etc. has been suggested by many. Many have pointed out that RF leaders and talking heads have been projecting their own vices onto Ukraine. As to Greenland, Panama, and Canada, be on guard. If the upcoming president gets free reign..
Ukrainians know by now.
I think many voted for him for the sake of change, and because he speaks in a way that does not intimidate them.

You know, Anna, we do not want to be unfair and condemn every person from the aggressor state, and reject them. I block friends who advocate for the aggressor state in a suspicious way on facebook, but we can say hello and chat when we meet. I tell them why I cannot have them as facebook friends. Also the Olympic committed thinks they want to avoid the problems that will arise pro/anti Israel, and lots of other wars going on around the world. It is about being polite in sports. Participants who participate in propaganda, and are used in propaganda are easier to dismiss, because they are not neutral, and just athletes. This is the most positive interpretation, I know. It may also, worse, be about corruption and not caring. At worst, it is direct disrespect for ukrainians.

Funny about the translation «rest», I think it would be better with «relax», «taking a vacation», «going for a holiday». «Rest» is a too literal translation of the Russian word. I think you are one of the best English speakers I know of in Ukraine, BTW.
.
Actually, this description made me think of a norwegian diplomat, who had a tantrum in English against hotel personell in Arkhangelsk. It was recorded on video, and used as an example of racism. Norwegian authorities have apologized for her behavior, and she will certainly have some serious meetings with her managers. «This is not the way Norway looks at russians». Generally, there have been some border issues, but never as negative as you in Ukraine have experienced. «Good fences make good neighbors» seems to have worked well so far. As to taking pens and smaller things at hotels, I guess I am a little guilty of that myself. I love pens. But towels and that sort of stuff, never.

Yes, it is scary. And life as we know will eventually be changed. Before this war, I was worried about the architecture of Kremlin, that the
architecture would be destroyed. But during these months it has become clear that NATO does not want war. We don't want Russia to be destroyed. But it seems that current leadership in Ruzzia wants it, or maybe they are living the delusion of being indestructible. Well, that is far from the beauty of being human.
There were survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
I watched a female blogger in Odesa, who had stopped watching TV, who thought that the talk of Yaderka was just some propaganda - scare. I guess this is another way of managing fear and being able to focus on daily tasks. My impression was that she is not alone, and that women like her might be gullible to ruzzian sweet-talk. That is the propaganda style directed towards women, it seems. And it is in the local language, not translated into English, so western media might understand.
I really hope this observation is helpful.
