  2. ​ @spencergoodin8622 If they could afford to shop at the family-owned store before Dollar General arrived, then they could afford to shop there after. If not, then Dollar General did them a service by providing products which they can afford.

If they're the only store in the area which carries fresh produce, they could just raise the prices for fresh produce rather than trying to subsidise those prices from their other profits which they're no longer making. Most people would be willing to pay more for healthy food. They only lose sales when another store offers the same product for a cheaper price, or a better product for the same price.
