Actually they did. The reason they didn’t have a workhorse tank was their doctrine called for two types of tanks. The Panzer III would engage other tanks and the Panzer IV would attack enemy fortifications. The roles would eventually switch and then they added the Panther to the mix to counter the T-34.

@sthrich635 The real issue was Hitler’s attitude of social Darwinism which meant every factory was competing. On paper doesn’t sound too bad but then you realize of the five atomic weapons the Nazis had, the most advanced was the Post Office. That paints the picture of Germany’s wartime problem too many cooks spoiling the soup. Plus they didn’t have the capacity of Britain with its Empire, the USSR or the US who could outproduce them without going all in.

Calling any tank a workhorse for the Germans (or British) is hinged on the idea they used it as their main for a particular length of tank. The issue is that Germans designed both the Panzer III and Panzer IV to fill different roles only for the Panzer IV to get the Panzer III’s anti-tank role when they reached the limit of that tank’s turret ring. Add in the Panther, and captured tanks, the German tank units were routinely swapping out designs and it was logistical nightmare.
