  1. I think the bigger issue with this argument of "not understanding the movie" is that if the film needs an art degree for you to see how good it is then it fails as on a significant level. A film should always entertainment and telling a coherent narrative first. To use your example of the shining it is considered a good movie because it genuinely haunting psychological horror film and whatever themes there are is secondary. If a film isn't entertaining then whatever themes it has means nothing because you don't go to the movies for the themes in the films, you for entertainment.
