The government was testing everything they could about atomic energy such as if it would affect children differently than adults. It was a new frontier at the time and they were doing all sorts of things like how would atomic weapons fair against naval warships or your average suburban house or how can we make nuclear depth charges, or nuclear powered bombers that could stay in the air for years or a man portable nuclear anti-tank weapon. The 1950s and atomic energy was a field day for mad scientists no idea was too absurd to not be approved by the government.

Yep and even the conspiracy theories that are true get exaggerated. For example, the poisonings during prohibition wasn't directly done by the government but you will never hear that part of the story. Or the Gulf of Tonkin Incident which is incorrectly depicted as a false alarm at best and false flag operation at worst even on this channel when there were two separate incidents that go by that name in the same week and the first one was confirmed to be a real attack by the NVA. You only hear about the second attack which was the one that didn't happen.

@Glitter_H_Hoof No we have. There is a a tier list of conspiracy theories ranging from plausible to completely nonsensical. There is a suprising amount of the latter.

No he wasn't he was a moron.

Just worth noting that sometimes the claims of a theory even when proven right can still be wrong Specifically, the Gulf of Tonkin Incident wasn't an American false flag. There were two separate incidents in the same week where Navy ships were put on alert after allegedly being attacked. The first incident is confirmed to be a real with bullet holes to prove it while the one conspiracy theorist latch onto is the second one which was a false alarm. Even Secretary of Defense Robert MacNamara who aired a lot of dirty laundry in his final years maintains that the first event was real and the second was a false alarm but not staged by the US government.

Government corruption and ineffectiveness. There was no conspiracy that led to Katrina's to still impact New Orleans for a decades the government just isn't effective at dealing certain disasters.

@Glitter_H_Hoof I am saying quite simply that certain conspiracy theories (Area 51 prior to being declassified) are more credible than others (secret cabals like lizard people ruling the world)

They knew what was going on there and how bad it was. The misinformation was done to compensate for the stuff the CIA knew was happening and couldn't report on without exposing the source of the information. Intelligence is a delicate balance as you can only reveal you know so much before the enemy catches on to how you got that information. This aspect of intelligence work has been understood since World War I.

@mayanboricua Only because they had to. If they gave too much true information the Soviets would track down the source of the leak.
1
@mayanboricua You are talking nonsense. The CIA isn't socialist.

No most theories are nonsenical. Like the idea that so many people were in on the assassination of John F. Kennedy. People who have meet Oswald in real life knew he was a nut job who could have done that on his own.
1
@End420Prohibition No they knew some stuff ahead of time about Oswald, but they didn't do it.
