And what made the error really stupid was they found and fixed it on the military version and assumed it wouldn’t be caught. This is the same type of hubris that made the Ford Pinto the worst car ever made in America by reputation. The car doesn’t explode nearly as much as you would think from the reputation it has, but the Pinto Memo revealed during a lawsuit that Ford had a cheap fix for the issue, but was cheaper for them to just hand out wrongful death settlements.

Well they did do recalls for other guns. The Cross is a bolt action you could fire from just working the bolt and not touching the trigger (there is a channel I forget which did a review of the Cross and had it happen to them while they trying to clear a jam) SIG did a recall then. I think they might be pulling a Remington.

Agreed. I saw another comment talking about the Beretta slide separation issues and blaming it one the Seals using +P+ FMJ (read: the standard ammo for a military service pistol) which it wasn’t designed for. That would still be a mistake on Beretta’s part for making a potential service pistol that can’t handle service pistol rounds. And the truth was the locking block failed before it should have and that was the issue. And Beretta knew it was their gun that was the problem. The M9 and 92FS have a new hammer design from the 92F to keep the slide from flying off if such a problem happened.

No there are documented cases where that happens and because of the such as the SKS with its free-floating firing pin.

Where was he point it? I hope it wasn’t at anyone in the class.

Well part of the reason the SIG issue was bad that this was a civilian version of the new military pistol which causes a red stapler effect. The fact that the military version has a design change that fixes the issue made things worse as it came off they let the design flaw slip past.

That reminds of a different problem. I read that the MAS-49/56 had a problem of not being drop safe because of the free-floating firing pin and the fact regular civilian ammo had standard primers while the military-grade ammo had much harder than normal primers.

“Without a manual safety engaged” and that is why the civilian P320 should have one like the military guns.

@DavidLLambertmobile No the issue wasn’t the rounds. The problem was that the locking block failed well before it should it have. And telling a military operator that your military guns isn’t rated for +P+ FMJ which is the standard military round is a stupid thing as it suggests you don’t know how to design a good gun. Beretta knew it was the locking block which is the the M9 and it’s civilian cousin Beretta 92FS have a redesigned hammer so that the slide will not take out your if the locking block fails before it should.

I can buy the fire if you don’t pull the trigger thing. I think it was the SIG Cross they had to recall because it could fire from just operating the bolt.

Well there was other reasons. First there Luger was WWI pistol so you need to consider the two decades of wear and tear it had going on. Also the Luger was never designed for a military setting. All the parts had to be hand-fitted which goes against most militaries where the parts should be interchangeable from one gun to the next. The cause for the Luger was probably a combination of those things. And these issues exist with other guns. 1911s and Walther P-38s spent decades in service and by the end of their service lives they were described by the soldiers using them as requiring “seven or eight warning shots and one aimed throw”. The M55 Reising which Ian did a video about years ago also had the issue of hand-fitting being needed but it was a weapon issued to the Marines who don’t treat all parts should be interchangeable from one gun to the next.
