  8. Sugar. Nobody has battleships anymore. Who needs big guns when missiles can get the job done faster and with less risk and cost? The US Navy retired the last operational battleships in the 1990s and these were refitted with stuff like missiles.

  10.  @ostsan8598  A civilian ship would still have redundancies. We learned lessons from the Andrea Doria and Titanic on how not make ships like this. The latter in particular became a moment where you started preparing for everything going wrong.

  12. That isn’t an excuse. The World’s Longest Ship was USS Pittsburgh which had the front fall off and still made it to port. In fact, they salvaged the front end after it broke off too.

  14.  @emilyadams3228  San Francisco is a bad comparison to make considering Japan’s ambitions for the entire Pacific Ocean and the territories we controlled which included islands such as Wake Island, Midway Island, Hawaii, and the Philippines. The last is pretty important as it was on Japan’s doorstep. By contrast China invading New Zealand would first involve them having to somehow bypass several nations between them and it including Australia which is a continent in its own right. A comparison would be Russia invading Portugal overland while ignoring every European in between.

  16. We had a near miss here in the states over a decade ago. Captain Holly Bigh was woefully incompetent naval commander who was booted for “cruelty and maltreat” to her crew and engaged in an unauthorized drag race with another destroyer which almost lost use two ships in a near collision. It says something when Time calls her a Female Captain Bligh.
