  3. No we got Nixon because the competition was Hubert Humphrey. Johnson wasn't on the ballot in 1968 as he didn't seek reelection correctly realizing that the Vietnam War poisoned his chances of winning by the Democrat vote.

  13. It wasn't even a choice on the ballot. LBJ didn't seek re-election so the Democrat ticket in 1968 had the name of his VP Hubert Humphrey on it. That said LBJ wasn't someone who screwed up the Vietnam War or had to resign from office. Anyone would have been a better choice than Nixon except for Agnew.
