Well the reason we changed is that it didn't work. John Adams who predates the idea of the political party, (that happened during Washington's tenure due to disagreements between Jefferson and Hamilton) was kept out of cabinet meets and called the position of VP "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived."

@LunarLocust Jokes aside he didn't intend to shoot someone. If he did he wouldn't be loading birdshot.
1
@LunarLocust Even common sense would dictate that you don’t use birdshot against a person.
1
@LunarLocust Most people would know you buckshot as the name suggest that is mean for deer and large animals. Birds are pretty small.

@LunarLocust Nice Strawman,

@LunarLocust What message are you sending by shooting a campaign contributor with birdshot except you are a terrible shot.

If that was the case why was Mike Pence of all people picked as his first VP? Pence was a textbook 'we need to get rid of this guy make him VP' thing.

The real primary function is being a warm seat to put the people you don't want to deal with but can't remove from office.
1
No it doesn't because voting influences how the electorates vote. They vote based on the majority outcome of the district. It is there so we aren't at the whim of the left-run crime ridden hell-holes we call the big cities.

The idea Vice Presidents don't mean much is as old as the nation itself. Here a quote from our first President John Adams about the VP role: "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived." To give you an idea, the only Vice Presidents people remember today are the ones who President later on and Dick Cheny. It was common practice for a long time to put the people you want to shut up in the VP position since they have little power. Martin Van Buren actually did't have a VP picked when he ran for reflection in 1840 because nobody cared even his first VP.

And being the place you leave the troublemakers.

He was actually a perfect example of the VP being the place you put the people the party doesn't want to deal with. It did however have the added effect of giving some credibility to Trumps campaign as he didn't have any political experience but Pence was governor of Indiana, but Pence didn't do much. Jared was the real second-in-command.

Also Gerald Ford is calling. The 25th is the reason he was both Veep and POTUS with nobody voting for him. In addition it was frequently invoked by President starting with Jimmy Carter when they undergo surgery leaving the Veep as acting president.

@SAFbikes Not really the VP is basically the person you send went the President is too busy or too lazy to visit a nation or come to Congress.
1
In theory, in practice it has been the place you send the troublemakers of the party where they can do the least damage (unless something happens to the President of course). It has been in that on-and-off for the history of our nation.

I would take either of them over Cheny. At least I am not afraid of going hunting with those two.
