  7.  @chrisb7528  The USS Liberty was in dangerous territory, the UAR, Isreal's opponents in the Six-Day War warned neutral ships to stay away from that part of the Mediterranian due to the war. The Navy realized it too (and the US wanted to disuade reports that they were assisting the Israelis in the war directly which could cause World War III) and issued an order for the entire Sixth Fleet to stay at least 100 miles away from the area which the Liberty didn't get due to communication screw-ups and was instead 20 miles from the Sinai Peninsula. The Israeli Navy got reports (both were later revealed to be false but this was unknown to the Isreali Navy and IAF at the time) that the town of El-Arish, was being shelled by an Egyptian ship so they set out to find the ship responsible, found the Liberty which was a warship, albeit an auxiliary ship, and attacked thinking it was shelling Arish. The jets broke off when they finally noticed that the pennant number which wasn't the type an Egyptian ship would use and were ordered to disengage. The Torpedo Boats were then order to hold fire while they tried to figure what ship they were actually attacking, but a whaleboat caught fire during the jet attack which not only blocked out most of the ship, but caused one of the .50 cals to cook off and fire in the direction of the torpedo boats. At the same time another manned gun opened fire having not Captain McGonagle's order to not attack the boats as he believed the attack was an accident at the time. This led to the torpedo boats returning fire with their torpedoes. The attack was not deliberate even if it was certainly neglient and reckless. The Isreali government was also quick to apologize and participate in Search and Rescue efforts for the survivors and paid reparations.
