Regarding the US: of course we would like for Ukraine to win, and funding a proxy against an enemy depletes that potential enemy disproportionately relative to one’s own resources, and would thus be both desirable and sound strategically. The problem is that China is watching the depletion of Western inventories at absolutely no cost to themselves while they prepare to take Taiwan. The US must constantly weigh its ability to meet all of its strategic necessities.

  2. That assumes that either there would not be ground combat on Taiwan, or that the US would neither commit ground troops to that combat nor preposition units or material configured to unit sets. Also, Abrams is a distinctly different kettle of fish with respect to fuel, learning curve and other logistical tails. And we’re not likely to be sanguine about the Russians having an opportunity to pull one apart at leisure.
