Check the mapping. Russian forces have been crumpling the western side of the Kursk salient while continuing to advance in other areas. Making it was an accomplishment, holding it is proving harder.

And Ukraine’s demographic pyramid is one of the few on earth that is worse than Russia’s with respect to military age men, and that on not quite one-third the population. No serious analyst posits a scenario where Ukraine takes back its territory using only their own forces. Some Ukrainian officials now frankly admit that getting NATO into combat roles is what they want and need. Will is about to undergo a major test as Ukraine is about to have a very cold and dark winter. They have gone from being a major energy exporter to a heavy importer, and can’t get what they have to many locations. Various European nations are also flagging in their support, and some are looking at coming elections where parties which have less (or no) interest in supporting Ukraine are gaining, eg AfD in Germany. Territory held is the currency of negotiations, and that is why both sides are straining for every square meter, even when a more flexible strategy might be more preferable operationally, particularly for Ukraine.
