  1. An alternative view is that, at least for some while, Bakhmut has been a mini-Verdun for the Ukrainians. They are disadvantaged by near-encirclement, but fight on for primarily symbolic reasons. The Russians have been leveraging the situation for attrition, and doing so from a favorable logistical position since the defenders’ supply routes are increasingly constrained.

  2. Nathanael Greene wasn’t at the Battle of Bunker/Breed’s Hill. He had been serving in the area, but was elsewhere at the time of the battle.

  4.  @foraminutethere23  The usefulness of Bakhmut to the Russians is not taking it, but the attritional grind that the opponent is unwilling to end by withdrawal.
