  2. ​@Thetequilashooter1 why do you think the US has no obligation to help Ukraine? We got them to give up their nukes, to Russia no less, and we all signed the Budapest memorandum which promised we would help them defend their sovereignty. So how do we have no obligation to help?

  3. ​ @Thetequilashooter1  i feel like you're purposely trying to misread what I'm writing. I even said that we do not have an obligation "BY LAW" to help Ukraine. So, yes, obviously by what I've wrote, I understand that it's not a treaty. It still doesn't mean that Ukraine, Uk, and many Americans feel that we still have an obligation to help protect their sovereignty and territory because of us signing the memorandum. You said we weren't allies when we signed it. Are you saying we are now? We're not NATO allies with them but we've had a "diplomatic relationship" with them since 1991, which is before the 1994 signing of the memorandum. If we don't consider them a "friend" why have we up until now, given them aid without wanting in return? Sounds pretty friendly. You keep trying to clarify that the nukes were not wanted and I agreed but that still doesn't change the reasons why the Budapest memorandum was signed and what Ukraine wanted from it. I mean, there's tons of articles even from UK that seem to think we all have an obligation to help because of signing that memorandum. And just so we're clear, an obligation doesn't have to be "by law," it can be morally bound or sense of duty.

We do not have to protect them by law like we would if they were a NATO country, but many believe we have an obligation to help protect their sovereignty because of the Budapest memorandum. The terms of what help would look like were left ambiguous in the memorandum, but they still agreed to it. I never said anything about whether Ukraine had "independent control" over their nukes. They didn't have operational control over them as they inherited the nukes from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Budapest memorandum gave them "security assurances," and they very much feel that the UK and US have an obligation to help in some way.
