Why is it ridiculous? It's not home owners insurance. It's disaster relief funds. The money is usually to help with temporary lodging assistance and they can help with home repairs or replacement but for fiscal year 2024 the maximum amount you'll receive is $42k. Again, fema is not home owners insurance. Getting any help from fema is good.

@lpe655 i live no where near water but I'm in a flood plain. I had to purchase flood insurance when we bought this house 2.5 years ago. We pay $600 a year for flood insurance. That's at least half of what my home owners insurance is. So, flood insurance isn't outrageous.

@TreeLBollingTreeMan Where did I mention Ukraine? Is it hard to understand that fema isn't home owners insurance? How could the government afford to replace every single home destroyed every time we have a natural disaster? Do you understand that the money sent to Ukraine comes from our defense budget which is the largest in the world. That money does not come from the same budget Congress approves for fema nor any other program that Americans use. You probably didn't bat an eye over the trillions spent during the 20 years we were at war. We are not the only country providing aid and it's actually saved us money by giving Ukraine old missiles that would've needed decommissioned not to mention the money for Ukraine that's being spent here in the US to provide jobs for people sending supplies over. The majority of aid sent to Ukraine isn't even in cash. I can't think of any programs in America that take tanks and missiles to help the average citizen here. And lastly, poll after poll shows Americans vastly approve of continuing to help Ukraine because it affects us as well.

@UnicornPurple-ut8wf that's not FEMA's job. That's the states job, and fema reimburses the state.

But what happened to all the trump supporters who spread misinformation that fema only gives people $700? This family just got $9 grand and still people in the comments saying it's not enough. It's sad that people are so misinformed about what fema even is and how they help. They don't give you every dime to replace your house and everything in it. That's what your home owners insurance is for. Getting fema money on top of your home owners insurance is a blessing. Not to mention this family is trying to set up go fund me on top of that. Fema money is to help you get by in a disaster and aid some of the cost while waiting for things to settle down and home owners insurance and hopefully flood insurance comes through.

Fema reimburses the states on money they spend to clean up natural disasters. The state pays for it first, and then fema reimburses them. Fema will never be paying a worker directly.

Not true. That money does not come from the same fund as the disaster money comes from. Congress approves the funds and fema has to show that they spent it on what they are suppose to. Fema has other funds that can be given to states to help with stuff like emergency food or shelter for migrants. That still doesn't affect the budget fema has for disasters. Also, Republicans voted against funding fema.
