Another thing Tedros Gebreyesos as Head of the WHO did in the first couple of months of 2020 was to actually tell countries not to close their airspace to flights from China - this at a time when all flights were grounded within China. It should be remembered that when Dr Gro Harlan Brundtland was Head of the WHO when SARS-CoV-1 struck in 2002-03, the recorded cases numbered 8,000 worldwide, with 700-800 deaths in total worldwide. The virus did not become endemic (it appears to have gone). SARS-CoV-2 is now endemic (ie will remain with us, hopefully as a not very bad pathogen for most people). Admittedly SARS-CoV-1 was a different virus, but I think the contrast in outcome is notable.
