I remember in the 1980s, when I was living just off North End Road in Fulham, south-west London, Denis Healey, former Chancellor of the Exchequer, former Foreign Secretary, glad-handing and chatting to the market traders in North End Road market just before a general election, to give support to the Labour candidate for the constituency. I saw no body-guards (perhaps they were very discreet), and ir all looked very relaxed. Happy days!
