One cousin-cousin marriage every 250 years or so probably does not cause too many problems. The problem arises when there is cousin-cousin marriage generation after generation, and marriage partners end up being extremely closely genetically matched. The children of some of these marriages can be extremely disabled - unable to see, speak, understand spoken language, eat without assistance, walk.

When you are talking about genetics, the claim is just wrong. Perhaps if they had to finance the consequences themselves - no NHS treatment - it would concentrate a few minds. Could a Freedom of Information request tell us exactly how much this primitive custom - oh, and the barbaric practice of FGM - costs the taxpayer per annum?

There are defects and defects. Yes, if a woman conceives when she has reached the age of 40, the probability of her child being a trisomy-21 Down Syndrome child rises to 1% (one per cent). It is also beginning to be suspected that there is an issue with older men begetting children - they may have a greater probability of producing a child with autism or schizophrenia - but a lot more study needs to be done on this.
