FGM has been a specific statutory criminal offence in Britain for more than 35 years (although perpetrators could have been prosecuted under the Common Law - eg grievous bodily harm, attempted murder, child abuse). In that time there has been ONE successful prosecution and imprisonment. The excuse is, apparently, that it is hard to get a five-year-old to testify against her parents in a Court of Law. The on-going situation is that hundreds (or is it thousands?) of British children have this lifelong physical and psychological damage inflicted on them per annum. This puts an unnecessary burden on the NHS in trying to lessen the suffering of these children - ask St Thomas's Hospital in London. It also means that i am forced to live in a country which has one law for one group of people and another law for another group of people (who do not recognise the law of the land).
