  1. Clinicians, doctors need to act within the law. This means that there needs to be a law for them to act within. When it was not specifically illegal to remove parts of, and disconnect, people's - often young people's - brains, haphazardly, without any evidence of benefit to the patient, and usually plenty of evidence that it was harmful, doctors in the USA and UK did it for decades to thousands of people who were suffering from various disorders. It is now recognised as being equivalent to grievous bodily harm.
