  1. Surely 'egg-producing' and 'sperm-producing' are just as binary as 'female' and 'male'? Only hermaphrodite creatures produce both eggs and sperm - some invertebrate groups such as earthworms and snails. (They do not fertilise themselves. Two individuals mate, exchange sperm to fertilise each other's eggs, then each individual goes away and lays eggs.)
