As one who is extremely allergic to diesel emissions, I welcomed the breathable air in central London which ULEZ brought. I had been made so ill on occasion that I was bedridden, gasping for breath and unable to open my excruciatingly painful eyes, for two days. We know about the fraud perpetrated - mainly by VW - by car manufacturers having different software to control emissions in the testing lab and on the road, thereby putting multiples of the poisonous fumes and lethal particulates into the air than was legally allowed. The EU fined them €20 billion (yes, billion) for this. The effect on children's developing lungs does not bear thinking about. What worries me is that, by pushing too hard, in terms of geographical extent, and in pricing, Sadiq Khan may have jeopardised the ULEZ necessary for central London.
