  1. It doesn't matter if you don't NEED to be able to do quick mental arithmetic any more, because of technology, but learning the basics gives you a picture of numbers and quantities. Also, what if, in an emergency, you HAD to do a quick long-division or long-multiplication, or had to make an estimate of a square root?
