  1. The terms 'gender', 'feminine' and 'masculine' have no place outside a book of grammar. Biological organisms do not have a gender. They have a sex - female or male (apart from some invertebrate groups which are hermaphrodite). In my young days - some time ago - a girl could be a 'tomboy' liking climbing trees, sailing boats, wearing jeans and short hair, without anyone remarking on it. Equally, a small boy could dislike football, like theatrics and dressing up, perhaps making dolls' clothes, without being in danger of being castrated. Would such children grow up to be gay? Possibly. Possibly not. So what? It is essentialist and therefore sexist to prescribe 'gender norms' and identify children as being 'gender conforming' or 'gender non-conforming'. What in the name of all that's wonderful does this mean? I really thought we had moved beyond mid-Victorian attitudes when it could be said with a straight face that girls who read 'difficult' books would render themselves sterile. Repeal the Gender Recognition Act!
