  1. For the first five years of being a junior hospital doctor in the 1970s my ex- - yes, note the 'ex' - husband worked on average 130 hours per week. I know this will be disbelieved - it usually is - and it improved a bit under EEC (precursor of EU) rules. The money was microscopic - my husband's bank refused to lend him £200 to buy a car. I don't approve of anyone going through this - there was a lot of alcoholism, drug addiction, being sectioned - sometimes brought into one's own A&E by the police! - very embarrassing for the A&E doctor in charge, everyone getting divorced, and one suicide that I can remember. Our parents refused to believe that for five years we had been unable to spend either Christmas or Easter with either set of them - they started to take it as rejection. It's just that I find highly paid GPs complaining about the pressure they are currently under a bit odd in comparison.
