  1. This happened in the 1970s as well when Enoch Powell was Minister of Health. Lots of the foreign hospital doctors could not speak English - I mean hardly at all, I don't just mean understanding the colloquial English that a patient might speak. The working hours were also extremely dangerous. 'Only on call' means you can be woken up at any time. I can remember my husband literally falling unconscious on the hall floor after driving home from the hospital - dangerous for him and other road users, but perhaps also for the patients he had just been treating. He felt very bad in his first job because a 24-year-old died on his watch because he literally could not be in two places at the same time.
