How many tonnes of concrete do we need to build a nuclear power station, and what is the carbon footprint of producing one tonne of concrete? Has the carbon footprint of mining, transporting and refining the uranium been factored into the total carbon footprint? Apparently a nuclear power station has a design life of 25-30 years, after which it must be decommissioned, and the whole facility safely enclosed in a concrete sarcophagus. How many tonnes of concrete would this require for the average nuclear power station? Has the security expense been accounted for - we don't want evil players to be stealing either unprocessed uranium or the plutonium which is the high-level waste from nuclear power production. Given the very long half-life of plutonium (which to all intents and purposes does not really exist naturally on Earth), isn't it being a bit optimistic to assume that high-level nuclear waste can be kept safe for 150,000 years?
