  1. Cookies/biscuits etc are trivial differences. What gets my goat is the Americans' refusal to recognise weak verbs, perpetrating 'dove', 'snuck', and the like, instead of the correct 'dived' and 'sneaked'. Another major abomination is the Americans' refusal to use the perfect tense, always using the past definite or past historic (le passe simple - sorry, I can't do acute accents). This means that they can't use the future perfect, conditional perfect or - most importantly - the pluperfect. This makes it difficult for me to understand what they mean half the time. They seem to be speaking English as if it were not their first language - even when it is. Another abomination - which seems to be infecting Britain - is the use of 'alternate' to mean 'alternative'. These are different words with different meanings. They are not synonyms. I quite like some American accents, but could they please learn English?
