  1. My chemistry teacher was fascinated by the electro-negativity of oxygen. This enables - indeed dictates - that water ice is less dense than water and therefore floats on water. Thus, ponds freeze from the top down, and pond life can survive the winter by burrowing into the mud at the bottom, thus enabling evolution. If the electronegativity of oxygen was any different, hydrogen bonding in the water - giving a tenuous bond between the oxygen atom of one water molecule and a hydrogen hydrogen atom of another water molecule - would not occur.
