  1. The Hillsborough football stadium disaster: this was caused by totally incompetent crowd control on the part of the police who were supposed to be controlling the crowd. They actually directed the football fans in the wrong direction and many - I think it was nearly 200 - were crushed to death. The police then blamed the fans, saying it had been caused by their rioting.
