The Suffragists rejected violence, wanting to continue campaigning, lobbying, writing, demonstrating, lecturing, etc as they had been doing for 50 years. The Suffragettes split from them, saying that these activities hadn't worked. The Suffragettes planned to attack Government property, and not to kill people. They did damage Government property by bombs, and no-one was killed or injured. However, as the ANC - who started out with the same policy - found out, eventually your bombs will kill people even though you don't want them to. The First World War saved the Suffragettes. They, and the Suffragists, decided to have a complete moratorium on political activity and to concentrate on contributing to the war effort for the duration of the War. Women had contributed to the war effort so much between 1914 and 1918 that inveterate anti-women's voters were over-ruled, and women BEGAN to be given the vote in 1918.
