  1. David, this is so interesting. In Scotland in the early 60s we had to wear school uniform - a good idea, I think, although I did not wear navy blue again for 25 years. This was ar a co-educational, state-maintained High School (what in England would be called a Grammar Schoòl). No make-up, jewellery or 'non-sensible' shoes allowed. We made up for this at week-ends - I do remember those elastic belts, and those huge petticoats under dresses - you could get them even stiffer by steeping them in a starch solution in the bath for 24 hours. We had to wear either black or flesh-coloured stockings - whichever were out of fashion at the time.
