During the Second World War Britain had a command economy, directed labour, conscription, rationing of almost everything, and identity cards. Other measures were quite severe as well. There was, at least for a time, evacuation of children as young as three from cities to unvetted people who fostered them (some ran back to their mothers, but many of these children never recovered from the experience psychologically). There was also draconian control of household blackout measures, and huge guilt-tripping of anyone who took a day off work due to being ill. They would return to their desk or workstation to be met by a notice headlined 'Why are you helping Hitler?'. The expression of a pessimistic thought was a criminal offence - 'Spreading Gloom and Despondency'. All this was agreed by the Coalition Government of the time as essential emergency measures.
