  1. Idols in Christianity: acceptable only in the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox Churches. Protestants tend to be iconoclastic. Extreme Calvinists (in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, for example) have no statues, paintings or stained glass in their churches. Some do not even have instrumental music - only unaccompanied singing of psalms (hymns would be much too modern), giving the congregation a starting guidance by means of a tuning fork. Within about two bars of music, everyone is singing in a different key signature and time signature. I used to hear these services as a child on the BBC Scottish Home Service and found them intriguingly similar to broadcasts from stations east of Istanbul. The effect was enhanced if they were singing in Gaelic. I'm not sure if this is still common. However, as a lapsed Calvinist (mainstream, not extreme) I can tell you that religious images are highly suspect.
