  2. George Orwell was right about political oppression and dictatorship, but wrong about language. He was not a psychologist or psycholinguist, and subscribed to the now discredited 'museum myth' of the relationship between words and their meanings. In other words, you cannot erase concepts from people's minds by scrubbing words out of books and dictionaries. New words will be invented to describe existing (and new) concepts. They may not map on exactly to the old meanings - you may need more than one word to describe different aspects of the old word, as you sometimes do when translating from one language to another. But there is a lot of thought without language - in non-human primates and, to a lesser extent, other mammals, and in pre-linguistic human babies. So, not so easy to eliminate concepts.
