  2. British politicians in 1989 were extremely mealy mouthed in defending freedom of speech, including Shirley Williams who more or less said that Rushdie had brought the death fatwa on himself by being rude.

If you are in the desert with no water to spare for washing in the meantime, it makes sense to keep one hand clean (typically the right hand as 85-90 per cent of people are right-handed) to do things like eating food or touching another person. The other hand would be used for doing dirty tasks. This makes sense hygienically.
