  1. According to my Calvinistic upbringing, kneeling before a portrait - any portrait, even of Jesus or the Virgin Mary, far less that of a mere mortal - is idolatry. Extreme Calvinists do not have any pictures, statues or stained glass in their churches, and do not accompany psalms with instrumental music - traditionallt a tuning fork was used to try to start all members of the congregation on the same note, although before long everyone would be following their own key and time signature. When I used to hear this on Scottish radio as a child it used to sound like something being broadcast from east of Istanbul, especially if it was in Gaelic. Btw, I love Catholic polyphony - but still against the idolatry.
